Hedge cutting in Glastonbury and across Somerset

From a regular trim to bringing a badly overgrown hedge back under control, we’ll help get it back to the size you want.

What is hedge cutting?

Hedge cutting covers trimming a hedge to keep it neat, and reducing its height or width when it’s got too big. Hedges that are overgrown or have been left for years can often be cut back in stages.

If trees within or behind the hedge are the problem, tree pruning or crown reduction may help too.

When you might need it

  • Your hedge has got too tall or too wide
  • It’s blocking light from your house or garden
  • It’s growing over a path, drive or road
  • It’s too high or too long to cut safely yourself
  • You’ve taken on a garden with a neglected hedge

Hedge cutting questions

When can hedges be cut?

It’s best to avoid the main bird nesting season, generally March to August, because nesting birds are protected by law. Any hedge needs checking for active nests before cutting at any time of year. We’ll advise you on the best time for your hedge.

How far can an overgrown hedge be cut back?

It depends on the type of hedge, as some recover from hard cutting much better than others. We’ll look at it and tell you what we’d recommend before any work starts.

What can I do about a neighbour’s high hedge?

Talk to your neighbour first if you can. If that doesn’t resolve it, the council may be able to help with a high hedge complaint. Somerset Council can explain how that works.

Do I need permission to remove a hedge?

Sometimes. Some countryside hedgerows are protected and you may need to notify the council before removing them. Garden hedges are normally not covered by this, but it’s worth checking if you’re unsure.

What happens to the cuttings?

We’ll agree with you before we start whether the cuttings are taken away, chipped or left.
