Stump grinding in Glastonbury and across Somerset

A stump left behind after felling can get in the way for years. Grinding it out means you can use the ground again.

What is stump grinding?

Stump grinding uses a machine with a rotating cutting wheel to chew the stump away into woodchip, down below ground level. The big roots further out are normally left in the ground to rot away.

If the tree is still standing, start with tree felling. Felling and stump grinding can be talked through together when you ask for a quote.

When you might need it

  • You’ve had a tree felled and the stump is left behind
  • An old stump is in the way of mowing, paving or a new lawn
  • You want to plant or build in that spot
  • The stump is a trip hazard
  • You’d rather not wait years for it to rot on its own

Stump grinding questions

How deep does the grinding go?

It depends on the stump and what you want to do with the ground afterwards. Tell us your plans and we’ll talk it through with you.

What happens to the woodchip?

Grinding leaves a pile of woodchip mixed with soil. We’ll agree with you before we start whether it’s left for you to use or taken away.

Can you get the machine into my garden?

It depends on the access to your garden, so please mention any narrow gates, steps or slopes when you get in touch. We’ll let you know if there’s a problem.

Do I need permission to remove a stump?

If the tree was protected by a Tree Preservation Order or a conservation area, or the stump is part of a planning condition, check with Somerset Council first. It’s also worth checking for underground pipes and cables near the stump.

Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?

Old roots stay in the ground after grinding, so it’s often easier to plant a little way from the old stump. We can talk through the best spot with you.
